Hey folks,

I was just wondering what off-skate training everyone does outside of ARRG to keep their fitness up? I'm a pretty avid distance-runner, and I've found it's come in immeasurably helpful so far in terms of my endurance levels for Fresh Meat! I'm always looking for new things to try, so I'm interested to hear what other people are doing, and what would be of benefit for derby fitness?

Secondly, if any of my fellow Fresh Meat ladies/gents are interested in coming and doing some running/interval training to get their fitness up, I'd be glad of the company!

Thanks again to the wise-owls for today, it was a lot of fun, can't wait until next time!

I found that running helped me alot - I used to hate it and now I heart it a little bit.

I asked my gym to put together a cardio/core plan for me.

We also just started off a 12-1pm off skates circuit session outside in the Jack Kane playground every Sunday if you want to join us! Pull ups on the monkey bars?!

Also there is the usual PX90/Insanity DVD combo's.

ballet/yoga/pilates - anything that works on your flexibility and core strength.

core.

I've found that interval cardio was imperative to my skating. It made me go from having two speeds (stop and go lol) to being able to sprint.

I'm also a massive fan of strength training but you need to train the right areas like core and legs. Although i'm not meant to be working on my upper body, a lot of upper body weight training exercises improve your core. Uhhhh deadlifts

I teach tai chi so that helps a lot with balance, fluidity & understanding the mechanics & energies involved in hitting.

I also goto bodypump when I can & do a bit of floor work in the house.

I am really missing going to Muay Thai~maybe at some point I'll be able to return to that.

I would love to do the circuits, but my band practice prior to Derby, so I'm not sure I could manage it with any regularity. Is it the case that I could 'drop in' if I was free?

Core stuff: bain of my life. Ever since I had my twins I ended up with separation of the long abdominal muscles (seem to be getting back to normal now) and a pelvis that likes to misalign itself, so I try extra hard to do it regularly. My husband mentioned dead lifts as well, but I'm not even sure where to begin with those! I'm really guilty of concentrating all my gym time on my lower body.

Tai-chi sounds great Alma, have always fancied doing something like that. I could do with being a bit of inner peace! Really cool that it helps with skating too. My other half used to do Muay Thai and loved it, though he mostly concentrate on Jeet Kune Do, Brazilian Ju Jitsu and Kali now.
